01 The client

The Sussex Flint Company is a traditional flint walling business based in Sussex. They work in knapped flint and hot lime mortar — repairing and restoring existing flint walls, and building new ones the traditional way, with the brick and stone dressings that go with them.

Their work falls into three groups: repair and restoration (including lime repointing, coping repairs and insurance-related repairs), new construction, and the brickwork and stonework that flint walls are built with. Estimates are free, and the site invites enquiries by email, telephone or WhatsApp.

02 The brief

This was the company’s first website, and it had a clear set of materials to work from: the client’s own photographs of their walls, and a short list of confirmed facts. We kept it to exactly that. There’s no stock imagery, no borrowed project photos, and no testimonials, accreditations or years-in-business claims that the client hadn’t confirmed. The work page says it plainly: “Photographs of our work, not of anyone else’s.”

03 What we built

A four-page static site — Home, Services, Our work and Contact — in plain HTML and CSS with one small JavaScript file. There’s no framework, CMS or build step, so there’s very little to load and very little to maintain. The palette takes its cues from the material itself: chalk, knapped flint, lime mortar and brick.

The photographs do the selling. Each one runs through an image pipeline that corrects orientation and produces responsive WebP and JPEG versions at three widths, so a phone downloads a phone-sized file. The home page leads with a hero photograph, a three-group service summary, a full-bleed landscape band and a six-photo mosaic; the Our work page is a fifteen-photo gallery with a caption on every image.

There’s no contact form. Every page ends on the same free-estimate panel — email, telephone or WhatsApp, which suits sending photographs of a wall — with a short checklist of what to include. The contact page adds a line for insurer references on insurance-related repairs.

Underneath, it’s built so everyone can use it: a skip link, labelled sections, a mobile menu that works from the keyboard and closes on Escape, visible focus states, reduced-motion support, and content that stays visible even if JavaScript doesn’t run.

05 What changed for the business

The Sussex Flint Company gained its first website: a four-page account of its services, craft and completed work, built by WebWork Software around the client’s own photographs and confirmed business information.

Visitors can inspect captioned examples of the company’s work and find the details to include when requesting an estimate. Contact routes cover email, telephone and WhatsApp for this client business. The static build gives the company a website with a small technical footprint.
